In Harmony with the Community
It is very important to us that we are in harmony with our surrounding community. That’s why Mercy Health is creating a hospital campus that will complement the Green Township community and welcomes patients, visitors, staff, physicians and the public.
As we develop the new Mercy Health – West Hospital, project leaders are also working to ensure there is as little disruption to the surrounding neighborhoods as possible. While there will be noise associated with the work, as well as large equipment and building supplies moving to and from the site, Mercy Health is pledging to do as much as possible to keep all aspects of construction from interfering with residents and business owners throughout the area.
The main entrance for Mercy Health – West Hospital will be developed on North Bend Road. To help reduce traffic congestion around the hospital, we will also expand North Bend Road to four lanes from Boomer to Kleeman.
Features of the Mercy Health – West Hospital campus include:
- An environmentally-friendly hospital that is designed to reduce pollution.
- Natural buffers, such as trees and tall bushes that will help maintain greenspace and reduce any noise from the hospital.
- A water garden that will provide a serene and peaceful setting.
- A Medical Office Building that provides easy access to multiple physician offices and a wide range of specialists.
- A walking/biking trail that winds through the campus and connects to Green Township parks.
- A Community and Education Center that will be available to the public for health education presentations, meetings, classes and other community events.
Providing Patients With a Serene View: Mercy Hospital West Green Roof Garden
Mercy Health – West Hospital will feature a unique “prairie landscape” atop its east and southwest rooftops to bring a dramatic green view from the patient towers.
Scientifically designed green roofs are environmentally positive elements that capture and hold much of the rainfall that falls upon them. The green roof will include a hybrid of both prairie plants together with lower growing sedum plants in shallow growing medium. Plants will be selected that can survive in harsh hot, cold and dry conditions.
Prairie plants will be grouped in “wave like” swirls on 18” berms curving across the two-and-a-half acres of green roof. When the wind blows the swirls will give a hint of ancient waves of prairie across the Midwest. The image of prairie will be a soothing and healing landscape to the eyes of those who will view from patient towers and adjacent areas.
Mercy Health – West Hospital Green Roof Facts:
- When completed the green roof will be Ohio’s largest at 107,000 square feet or two-and-a-half acres.
- 1,300 native prairie grasses will be planted in the “prairie swirls” including Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed.
- 8,000 additional native prairie plants will be planted in the ‘prairie swirls” including Liatris, Monarda, Rudbeckia and Obedient Plant.
- 4,800 Allium, butterfly Weed and Pinks will be planted at the edges of the “prairie swirls”
- 50,000 sedums including Wiehenstephaner’s Gold and three other sedums will be planted over the remaining green roof in the shallow growing areas.
The design concept for the green roof evolved within the design team of Ellerbe Becket, Close, Champlin and Meisner + Associates / Land Vision.
